Holiday gift guide 2010: Four video games

4. Professor Layton and the Unwound Future ($29.99)

There's a strange wistfulness in playing Professor Layton games – an inexplicable nostalgia brought on by its "Triplets of Belleville" cartoon style and lullabylike accordion soundtrack. This charm is essential. It helps soothe your mind after completing each of the game's 160 head-scratching brainteasers. In this third title for the Nintendo DS series, the professor must unravel the mystery of a clockwork time machine gone awry, causing its inventor to vanish. Solving each puzzle – which can range from elementary to downright dastardly – brings players one step closer to the truth. Best for kids age 12 and older, though don't be surprised if Dad wants to play along.
