After many years of leadership for pro-democratic causes, including incarcerations and a time of exile in the US, Kim Dae-jung became the eighth president of the Republic of Korea. His election marked the first time an opposition candidate had defeated the ruling party in that country.

He was awarded “for his work for democracy and human rights in South Korea and in East Asia in general, and for peace and reconciliation with North Korea in particular.”
