Sequels didn’t deliver this year, says Dergarabedian, pointing to such notable under-performers as the follow-up to "Sex and the City," plus "Iron Man 2." The Robert Downey Jr. vehicle kicked off the summer with less-than-spectacular reviews, he notes, adding that this sense of let-down was part and parcel of a lackluster summer moviegoing experience. Fewer sequels and lower-than-expected revenues have made this a disappointing year overall, he adds.

The one bright spot on the sequels landscape was Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, Part 1, which brought in $24 million at midnight screenings alone, setting a box office record.
