The New Year's Eve ball is lit at the top of the a 141 foot flagpole on top of One Times Square during a test run, Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010 in New York. The ball is powered by 32,256 Philips Luxeon LEDs and covered in 2,688 Waterford Crystals.

The famous Times Square ball drop in New York City will attract more than a million visitors. The drop has spawned many imitation ball drops around the country, which often reflect regional eccentricities and traditions – for example, Atlanta features a (fake) peach drop and North Carolina has both a flea drop and a possum drop (both using fake animals), the state's WRAL news station reports.
